Electric & automatic garage doors

Whether you're fitting a new door with electric operation from day one or automating an existing manual door, the safety requirements are the same.

New installation versus converting an existing door

A new sectional or roller door is almost always sold with electric operation as an option, and it's the simpler route, the door and motor are matched from the start. Converting an existing manual door is a different job, we check the door's condition and weight first, since not every older door is suitable for automation without other work first.

Up-and-over doors can generally be automated, though canopy-style mechanisms sometimes need a specific type of opener arm to work properly. Sectional and roller doors are usually the most straightforward conversions, their mechanisms are built with automation in mind even on manual versions.

Remote controls and how they actually work

Modern systems use rolling-code remotes, the code changes with every use, which is significantly more secure than older fixed-code systems still found on some very old installations. If you're automating an older door, this is worth knowing, an old fixed-code receiver is a genuine security weak point worth upgrading rather than just adding a motor to.

Safety features aren't optional extras

Force limitation and auto-reverse aren't premium add-ons, they're required for any powered door sold in the UK, designed to stop the door and reverse it if it senses resistance rather than continuing to close on an obstruction. We test this on every installation and every conversion, not just confirm the door opens and closes.

Power and manual override

Every electric opener needs a manual release for power cuts, a cord you pull to disconnect the motor and operate the door by hand. We show you where it is and how it works on every job, it's not something you want to be hunting for in the dark during an actual power cut.

Maintenance and what it costs

Automated doors need the same track, spring, and cable maintenance as manual ones, plus periodic opener checks, worth building into a regular service rather than waiting for a fault. New electric installations typically add £150–£350 to a door's price depending on the opener spec, converting an existing door to electric usually runs similar, sometimes more if the door needs remedial work first to be suitable for automation.

Smart, app-controlled options

App-controlled openers let you check the door's status and open or close it remotely, genuinely useful if you're someone who lies awake wondering if you shut the garage. They cost more than a standard remote-only opener, and we'd only recommend the upgrade if you'll actually use the feature, it's not worth paying for otherwise.

Common questions

Most can, but we check the door's condition and mechanism first. A door in poor condition sometimes needs remedial work before automation makes sense.

A manual release cord disconnects the motor so you can operate the door by hand. We show you exactly where it is on every job.

If you'll genuinely use the remote monitoring, yes. If you just want reliable remote operation, a standard opener does that perfectly well for less.
