Off-track garage door repair

One corner sagging, the door grinding against the frame, or it just won't roll smoothly anymore. Almost always the track, not the door itself.

What actually causes it

01

A knock from a vehicle

The classic cause, and you'd be surprised how often it's a bike rather than a car.

02

Fixings working loose over years

Decades of vibration and the bolts holding the track eventually give, until the door jumps the rail.

03

Worn rollers

A roller that's flattened or cracked stops rolling smoothly and can walk the door off the track under its own movement.

04

Cable failure

A cable that's frayed or slipped off its drum pulls the door unevenly, which is often mistaken for a track problem when the cable is the real cause.

05

Cold weather

Metal contracts and rollers that were already marginal start catching in winter.

Why forcing it makes things worse

The instinct when a door won't move smoothly is to push harder, and that's exactly the wrong move. Forcing a door past a jam usually bends the track further, or puts enough sideways strain on the panel to warp it, turning a straightforward realignment into a track-and-panel job. If the door's fighting you, stop and call rather than push through it.

Realignment versus a new track

Most of the time, we can realign the existing track, tighten the fixings, and replace worn rollers, and that's it, job done in an hour or two. A bent or badly kinked section of track is a different story; trying to hammer a kink back into shape usually just moves the problem along the rail, so at that point replacing the damaged section is the honest answer, even though it costs more.

Our repair process

1

Identify the cause

Track, roller, or cable, they need different fixes.

2

Realign or replace

Tighten and straighten where possible, replace only what's actually damaged.

3

Swap worn rollers

Included as standard when we're already working on the track.

4

Full cycle test

Smooth operation confirmed before we leave.

Common questions

We'd advise against it. There's real tension in the system and it's easy to make the misalignment worse or injure yourself trying.

Not if the underlying cause is fixed properly, loose fixings retightened or worn rollers replaced rather than just pushing the door back on.

See the full price breakdown, typically £90–£180 for a straightforward realignment.
