The spec table above answers "what's cheapest" quickly, but the decision that matters more is usually about your specific garage, not a generic comparison. Here's how we'd think it through if it were our own driveway.
Start with clearance. If a car regularly parks within a couple of feet of the garage door, up-and-over is off the table before you even look at price, the outward swing and a parked bumper genuinely don't get along. That alone pushes most tight-driveway Birmingham homes toward sectional or roller.
Then think about what's behind the door. A garage that's just car storage doesn't need much insulation. A garage that's a workshop, or shares a wall with a room you heat, benefits noticeably from a sectional door's panel construction, it's a genuinely different experience in January.
Then headroom. Sectional doors need a bit more space inside the garage for the track mechanism than some people expect. If your garage ceiling is unusually low, roller is often the more realistic option regardless of which one you'd otherwise prefer.
Security and automation apply to all three. Any of these door types can be motorised, and modern locking points on a decent sectional or roller door are genuinely harder to force than an older up-and-over's single central lock. If security is a real concern, that's worth factoring in ahead of the door type itself.
