Sectional garage doors

Rises straight up in horizontal panels rather than swinging out. Our default recommendation for anyone who parks close to the garage.

Most recommended
the door type we suggest most often on tighter Birmingham driveways.

Why we recommend these most often

No swing-out means no clearance to worry about, and the panel construction insulates noticeably better than a single steel sheet, which matters if the garage is attached to the house or you use it as a workshop. It costs more than up-and-over, usually by a few hundred pounds once you include the opener, but for anyone with a tight driveway or a garage they actually use, we think it's worth it.

Insulation and finishes

Panels typically come in foam-filled steel with a range of finishes, woodgrain, smooth, or ribbed, and a colour range wide enough to match most house fronts. The insulation value genuinely helps in an attached garage, less so in a fully detached one used purely for storage.

Security

Sectional doors typically lock at multiple points along the frame rather than one central point, which makes them harder to force than a standard up-and-over. Worth factoring in if security is a priority alongside the insulation benefit.

Sectional versus the alternatives

Sectional vs roller: sectional generally insulates better and costs less for a comparable spec, roller wins on compactness if headroom is genuinely tight.

Sectional vs up-and-over: sectional costs more but removes the clearance problem entirely and insulates better, a straightforward trade of price against practicality.

One thing to know

Sectional doors need slightly more headroom inside the garage for the track mechanism than some people expect. It's rarely a problem, but if your garage ceiling is unusually low, we'd check this before you fall in love with a specific finish.

Common questions

Not always included in the base price, but nearly all sectional doors can be motorised, and most customers choose to.

Yes, sectional doors are made to measure for both, with the double opening version costing proportionally more for the extra material and heavier hardware.
